Carbon Offsets You Can Do While Travelling To Protect the Environment

When you are travelling or even simply commuting to the school or the office you are producing carbon footprint. It’s greenhouse gas emitted from daily activities done by human which include carbon dioxide and other pollutants. Travel is one of the biggest causes of carbon footprint. Thus, it’s important that we start being more aware to become a more responsible traveler.

Be a responsible traveler by reducing carbon footprint

If you love travel and worry about producing more carbon footprint, you can adopt best practices to help reduce it. Therefore, we can contribute to increase air quality and decrease extreme climate conditions. You can do it through carbon offsets by implementing these best practices:

Be more considerate in using electricity and water wile travelling

Keep in mind that the electricity and water you spend in hotel during your holidays also create emissions. And sometimes you tend to forget that and end up carelessly using the lights, electronic appliances, and heating or cooling system, etc. You keep them on for 24 hours and it only increases your greenhouse gas emissions in your accommodation. Therefore, it’s best to avoid wasting water or electricity when you don’t need them. Use them wisely and moderately as you need.

Pack less and rent more

It’s highly suggested that you start packing light now because the heavier your luggage is, the more gas emissions emitted by the airplane you are taking. It’s because the airplane needs higher fuel consumption to carry the loads and it results in bigger carbon footprint. Hence, it’s best to pack less and avoid packing too many items you won’t even need for your trip. You can also consider rent certain items such as camping equipment from the local renters. Packing light also allows you to move more freely without draining your body.

Pack reusable items on your travel

Be a responsible traveler by reducing carbon footprint

Most travelers love using disposable items during a trip as it’s more convenient. However, those items require a significant amount of energy to get recycled. Their disposal also add to landfill and ocean pollution. Therefore, using disposable travel items only add more problem to our environment. As alternative, you can bring reusable items instead to use during your trip such as refillable water bottles, reusable food containers, reusable shopping bags, reusable straws, reusable coffee cups, etc.

Choose more environment-friendly ways to get around

You can explore the places you are travelling to by bike, walk, or take public transportation. Renting private transportation can create a large impact on carbon footprint on your trip. Therefore, it’s more recommended to stroll around the city on foot, riding a bicycle, or taking e-scooter.

Enjoy more local foods

You also need to be mindful in choosing the food you consume when travelling if you don’t want to be responsible for more emissions. Try to eat as much local foods or plant-based cuisine as you can because local restaurants operate locally and don’t produce shipping or transport emissions. You can also support local community and join their sustainable program.
